Some football fans have wondered how football clubs make their money. Well, there are many ways and one of them is through shirt sponsorship deals. Today, we are going to look at the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in world football.

  1.  Manchester United

Manchester United have continued to lead the way in monetization of its brand. Their record       breaking 7 year shirt sponsorship deal with American car maker, Chevrolet is a testament. Other football clubs are keenly beginning to follow their business model. The deal is worth £53 million a year. And this is coupled with the £75 million kit deal with Adidas. The deal with Chevrolet broke the record Chelsea set, when they signed a £50 million a year shirt sponsor deal with Samsung. That Chelsea deal with Samsung broke United’s former £36 million a year shirt sponsorship deal with Vodafone. United last three shirt sponsorship deals shows how powerful a brand United is.
Manchester United’s last three deals:
AOn –            £20 million per year.
AIG –             £20 million per year
Vodafone – £36 million per year

2.    Barcelona

The Spanish based football club has been an outsider in shirt sponsorship deal until recently. Barcelona had played for many seasons without any company’s name or logo on their shirt. Then they had a deal with Unicef. But it was Barcelona that paid Unicef £1.8 million a year to put its name on their jersey. After that humanitarian service, came Qatar Airways. The airline company paid them £26 million a year in a shirt sponsorship that ended in 2016/17 season. Before the start of the 2017/18 season, Barcelona signed a record breaking shirt sponsorship deal with a Japanese company, Rakuten. The deal is worth £47 million a year and £188 million for four years.

3   Chelsea

Since their takeover in 2003 by Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s brand have soared! From just £4 million a year deal with Fly Emirates to a record breaking deal of £50 million a year deal with Samsung. It tells you what the Russian billionaire has turned this club into. And they kept Manchester United on their toe after that deal with Samsung. After the deal with Samsung ended, the blues signed a £40 million a year deal with Yokohama tyre in 2015.

4     Arsenal
In 2002, Arsenal signed a shirt sponsorship deal with Telecommunication company, 02. The deal worth £3 million a year plus a share of revenues from a range of text alert and other mobile services. This deal ended in 2012. Then their marriage with Fly Emirates began – their current deal with the airline company is worth £30 million a year.

5.     Bayern Munich
Their deal with German Telecommunication company, Deutsche Telekom is worth £25 million a year.
6.    Liverpool
They had a long partnership with Carlsberg, the Danish brewer in a deal worth £7.3 million a year. When they finally ended their partnership with Carlsberg which spanned for more than twenty years, they signed a lucrative deal with Standard Chartered and is worth £25 million a year.
7.   Real Madrid
The Rumor circulating is that the Spanish giant are in the process of negotiating an extension deal with Fly Emirates, which would be bigger than United and Barcelona deals. Let’s hope it is true. Their current deal is worth £20 million a year and it will expire at the end of 2017/18 season.
