What is cup tied rule in football?

When a player is not eligible to play in a cup competition because he had played in the same competition for different team during the same season. This is when such a player is said to be cup tied. This usually happens when a player changes team during the January transfer window. This rule was put in place to prevent wealthy clubs from buying players from lesser clubs that they are up against and strengthen their chance of winning the competition.
In this season(2019-20)  UEFA Champions League first knockout stage, the teenage sensation, Erling Haaland played for Borussia Dortmund against Paris Saint German, having already played in the same competition for Red Bull Salzburg in the group stage. Well, if it were in the previous season's competitions, Erling Halaand would have been deemed ineligible. He was only able to play because the UEFA governing body had scraped the rule from all European competitions.
     What does this mean?
It means that, for the first time, a player could play for two different clubs in the group stage and in the knockout rounds of the Champions League or Europa League, in the same season. UEFA did not allow any player to play for a second team whatsoever until 2005/2006 season, when it permitted players to move between competitions only in January. The players who had played in the qualifying rounds from being registered for another team in the group stage in the 2012/2013 season.
UEFA scraped the cup tied rule due to pressure from high-profile clubs and players, most notably from Barcelona and Arsenal football clubs.
