BOEING VS. AIRBUS 2
In 2017 Boeing made a net profit of $1.45 billion, 19% more than the previous year. Airbus made $261.7 million, 52% less the previous year. Boeing also made more commercial deliveries of 198 as compare to 136 by Airbus.
Though Airbus reported a strong full year in 2018, it was Boeing who stood out. The Boeing Commercial Airplanes unit stood out in 2018, its operating profit surging 45% year-on-year to $7.9 billion.
That profit largely reflects the record 806 commercial aircraft Boeing delivered. Those included 580 737s, 145 787s and dozens of 767s and 777s.
The profits came in a challenging time, as Boeing upped 737 production to 52 aircraft monthly amid significant supply chain issues, not all of which have been resolved.
2019 turned out to be a nightmare year for Boeing as opposed to what the company predicted. Boeing predicts it will generate $110-$112 billion of revenue in 2019, about 10% more than in 2018.
The number of planes delivered by Boeing dropped by more than a third in the first six months of 2019 compared with the same period the previous year. Airlines became increasingly reluctant to buy from Boeing in March after the second fatal crash in five months involving one of its 737 Max 8 planes.
The 737 Max will remain grounded until the FAA and regulators around the world approve the plane to fly again. Airlines are are seeking compensation from Boeing as they cancel flights involving Max jets, and one airline has canceled its order for $6 billion worth of the planes.
While Boeing are in a period of crisis, its European counterpart more than doubled its profit during this same period. Its adjusted operating profit reached 2.53 billion euros ($2.82 billion) — a 118% increase compared to the first half of last year. The company's boost comes as it already threatens its US rival Boeing's status as the world's largest plane maker as Boeing deals with fallout from two 737 Max crashes, leading to lower deliveries and profits. Boeing has maintained its status as the world's biggest plane maker since 2012. But it seems that will change soon. Stay tune.
