The huge money that comes into the premier league has caused unsettlement around Europe already – like Real Madrid seeking court injunction to stop the Spanish FA from following the Premier League’s model of distributing the prize money.
2016/17 season was the start of the record breaking three years Tv deal which the Premier League signed with Skysport and BTsport. That deal made the Premier League to cement its position as the most lucrative league in the world.
Skysports and BT sports share he telecom rights of the premier league in United Kingdom in a £5.136 billion. With Tv rights – both domestic and oversees, the total aggregate rose to £8.5 billion.
Let’s take a closer look at how this money is shared to all the 20 Premier League clubs.
The £8.5 billion is divided into three sections for the three seasons in which the deal will last. About £2.6 billion a season will be distributed to the head association clubs – some portions of the money will be used as a parachute installments to clubs. The prize pool money for 2016/17 season was around £2.6 billion.
The total cost for the three years Tv rights money is £5.50 billion and is broken down as follows :
Skysports pays £4.2 billion for 126 live games — 5 packages
BT sports pays £960 million for 42 live games — 2 packages
BBC pays £204 million for the match of the day highlights
Others, sun goal app and UK media rights pays a combine total of £150 million.
The 2016/17 season prize money was set into two portions :
Portion A: Domestic TV money ( £1.8 billion ) : This money will be shared to the 20 clubs as shown below.
50% of the domestic TV money will be divided equally to all the 20 clubs – each club will pocket around £38 million.
25% of the money will be paid to clubs on merit based – it is divided according to final league position. The club that ends the season in 20th position will have £2 million – rising higher by £2m for every position, with the champion pocketing £24 million for this portion of the money.
25% of the money is given to clubs as facility fee, depending on how many times the team’s match was shown live( a club ends £1m for every of its live match shown. )
Portion B : Oversees TV money ( about £1 billion )
Oversees TV money is divided equally to all the 20 clubs – each club ends around £47m here.
