Aging Without Getting Old
Importance of Vitamins
Late Albert Szent Gyorgi, M.D, Ph.D, defined Vitamin as a substance that makes us sick and even die by not eating it. His definition reflects the great importance of vitamins. If we do not obtain the vitamins or minerals we need from our food supply or in supplement form, we can become sick and even die.
A vitamin is a group of organic compounds that in very small amounts, are essential for normal growth, development and metabolism. Almost all vitamins are not synthesized or made in the body and therefore, must be supplied by the diet. Vitamins are produced by living material, such as plants and animals, as compared to minerals that come from the soil. Lack of sufficient quantities of any of the vitamins produces specific deficiency diseases. It is true that, if a substance does not produce a deficiency symptom when it is removed from the diet, it is not considered as a Vitamin. Vitamins are not used as sources of energy. They contain no calories and they cannot make one fat. When Vitamins are not present in sufficient quantity, metabolism ceases or is impaired.
Vitamins as an anti-aging insurance policy
A typical signs of old age are actually symptoms of scurvy. Which can include loss of teeth, wrinkles or loss of skin elasticity and brittleness of bones. And what causes scurvy? Lack of Vitamin C in the body will cause the body to suffer from the disease called scurvy. Vitamin C is a potent broad-spectrum, non-toxic virus fighter when used in large doses. Experts, scientists have long known that Vitamin C may well be one of the life-extending and anti-aging products available to man.
Studies have shown that large doses of Vitamin C have a life-extending effect for patients with advanced cancer, as well as preventive effect. Cancer patients seem to have a much greater requirement for Vitamin C than normal individuals because all available Vitamin C is mobilized by the body in its effort to boost natural resistance and repel invasive malignant growth. Vitamin C does not have side effect no matter the quantity one consumes. And the older we become, the less we are able to store and use Vitamin C. So, as we advance in age, we need to increase our daily intake of Vitamin C. With conscious and proper intake of Vitamin C, one can slow down the process of aging and prevent cancer. Vitamin C is just one out of many Vitamins – each Vitamin has arole it plays in the body.
When we perspire, take diuretic drugs, such as high blood pressure medication, or have diarrhea, we lose an abnormal amount of water-soluble vitamins. Along stress and exertion, these are what could increase the need for vitamins in the body.
